The main purpose of mechanical reduction gears is to modify the speed ratio (or torque) of the mechanism. To do this, the input shaft and the output shaft can have different configurations (motor shaft perpendicular to the output shaft for tapered torque reduction gears and worm gears or the motor shaft in the axis of the output shaft for planetary reduction gears, for example.
